The recent report from PwC, stating that “IT suppliers will lose £3.7bn in the government spending review”, makes for interesting reading. It is also, in our opinion, a reflection of the excess of the previous 10 years when it comes to IT spending.

It is not exactly breaking news that many who have been involved in Public Sector IT projects were dismayed at the overly complex, over-engineered and vastly over-priced solutions that were being proposed and deployed. With public money so freely available, expensive consultants were given free rein to ‘over spec’ projects and include all of the ‘nice to haves’ when the ‘must haves’ would have sufficed. Whilst our sector, education, “still has some money being filtered through to IT suppliers”, it is hoped that in the coming years this money will be spent more wisely than in the past. With (according to the same report) outsourcing set to be a major beneficiary of the government cuts in IT spending, it is our aim to help IT support organisations in the education sector drive service delivery efficiencies that are normally associated with outsourcing –- and to achieve this not by the deployment of expensive and capital-intensive technology, but by deploying sensible, relevant technology that provides all of the ‘must haves’, and with an almost immediate ROI.

In essence the Public Sector does have a choice when it comes to IT; it is not simply a case of the “status quo vs outsource”. With a rational approach to change, and the right technology, government can deliver the savings they need whilst maintaining service levels.
